Have you seen the cover shot on the Summer/Fall 2010 issue of Outdoor Photography Canada (OPC) Magazine? It’s my shot of a Kermode “Spirit” Bear and there is an accompanying article inside about a trip I lead last fall to photograph these wonderful and uniquely Canadian bears. This isn’t my first cover shot on a magazine…

Polar Bears waiting for winter and killing time

Polar Bears waiting for winter and killing time

I thought I’d make a video that told the story of the Polar Bears, waiting along the shores of Hudson’s Bay for the bay to freeze up. The bears rely on ice in the bay to help them return to their hunting grounds on Hudson’s Bay where they hunt seals. This hunting is extremely important because…

I was sitting back the other day contemplating what a great year 2009 had been. 2010 is going to have to be pretty spectacular to upseat it, but I’m optimistic. My year, like my life, largely revolves around photography and I thought it might be useful to run through the time line and hit on a few of the highlights…

Legend of the “Spirit Bear”

Legend of the “Spirit Bear”

For many years, the Spirit Bear was considered a legend of the Gitg’at and Kitasoo Native Peoples. Their legends told of a time when the glaciers finally receded, and it was Raven who made everything green. Raven also decided to make one in ten black bears white, to remind him of the time when the world was white with snow and ice. Raven decided to set aside a special area of the world for these bears – now known as the Great Bear Rainforest. It was a remote paradise where the bears were to live…

September Update – Wolves, Lynx and Leopards!

September has returned all the daytime wanderers (school folks, their parents, folks on holidays, etc.) to their regular routines and my errands today took half the time they did during the summer. It was the beginning of August when I noticed the first leaves starting to turn colour here in Edmonton, and while the full fall colour season is still probably a few weeks away, the trees seem well aware that winter is on its way.

I’m very excited about my upcoming…

Hey you! Where’d you leave your integrity?

I have a problem with photographers who pretend that the image they made of a captive animal was actually an image of a wild animal. In my opinion it is dishonest and does a disservice to the wildlife photography community. I also have an issue with what I consider a lie by omission. Some photographers don’t say whether the images they present are of wild or captive animals and I think they do this as they’d prefer the public to assume they are images of wild animals. I think this is dangerous to both…

Secrets of the photo workshop business

Secrets of the photo workshop business

I’m writing this article because frankly, I’m upset. It seems that everytime I meet with photographers who have attended a workshop, at least one of them has a horror story about a previous workshop they’ve attended. Often, I’m surprised they were able to put the bad experience behind and have the fortitude to try again with another workshop leader. What’s really upsetting about a lot of things I hear about the nature photography workshop business is that it…

Yeah, we get it! The camera brand you’ve chosen is the best and anyone who chose a different brand (or even a different model) is a freakin’ idiot. Please leave the fanatic mentality at home and let people wallow…

Spring Black Bears – A video report

I just returned from a very successful workshop focussed on spring Black Bears. The workshop was held at the Riding Mountain Guest Ranch just outside Riding Mountain National Park in south west Manitoba, Canada. If you’ve never been to this area of the world you really owe yourself a visit. It is truly a remarkable area of the continent with a huge variety…

May Update – Summer seems so long ago

The winter that would never end; that’s how I’ll remember this spring. While we have occasional days of “normal” temperatures, we have had a very cold spring. For instance, as I write this, the temperature is hovering around freezing and the forecast is calling for up to 5cm (2 inches) of snow by tomorrow. But, I long ago learned that my whining has no influence on the weather and I’m hopeful that the weather for my upcoming…
